Susan Saunders Langford and Thad Langford grew up in Salisbury and Lexington N.C. respectfully. They did not come from wealthy families, which made playing tennis a luxury. Susan and Thad won many tournaments including multiple N.C. State Closed tournaments and the Tar Heel Qualifier. Both competed at the Southern and National levels. Susan and Thad played collegiately as well with Susan playing at NC State and Thad at the University of Arizona. Once out of college and into life, they reconnected. Not too long after that it was a "love match" and they married. A few years later, generation #2 came along, with daughter, Bryson, the light of their lives! She is now an accomplished tennis player as well!
Understanding the financial obligations required and blessed to be in a position to give back and assist other young players, the Langford's partnered with the NC Tennis Foundation to establish the Saunders-Langford Endowment to offer need-based youth the opportunity to develop, compete, and play the game their family loves and cherishes.
This grant is open to any NC junior who has played at least 3 USTA sanctioned tournaments in the past 12 months. He/she will be asked to submit a plan to enter and play 3 or more USTA sanctioned tournaments in the next 12 months. The purpose of the grant is to help a junior who is trying to get to the top 100 or better in the Southern Section reach that goal. We encourage those ranked 125 to 150 in USTA Southern to apply. We will not award grants to those who are already ranked 1-100 (these players should click here to seek USTA Southern section grant opportunities).
The family must be in need of financial assistance with a family income no greater than $100,000 per year for one child playing and $120,000 for more than one child playing USTA sanctioned events. The junior player must demonstrate excellent sportsmanship and will be considered ineligible if ANY suspension points have been given over the past 12 months. An emphasis will be given to junior players in towns under 100,000 in population according to the US Census.
